Exfolia Botanical is the Chicago based floral project of Cassandra Stadnicki.

Cassandra’s fondest early memories are those walking through a rainy Midwest forest hunting for mushrooms or harvesting peonies from the garden with her Dad to gift their dear neighbors every spring.

Her fine art photography background lead her to create immersive gallery and public art experiences investigating nature, impermanence, memory and connection, while honing invaluable skills in hospitality. 

Inspired by the foraged edible hauls arriving at the restaurant each week, Cassandra reconnected with nature. She worked as a professional forager for chefs across Chicago and managed a greenhouse and hydroponic lab before transitioning into floral design. After training alongside notable floral companies while continually pursuing personal growth, she opened her brick-and-mortar floral studio and retail shop in June 2021. 

With our shared love of nature and creative minds, we design floral arrangements that celebrate the unique shapes, colors, and wonders of the botanical world.

  • Emily Spurlin

    FLORAL ARTIST

    Emily Spurlin is a florist and herbal enthusiast that has been with Exfolia since the opening of the brick and mortar shop in 2021. She expresses her creativity and playfulness through nature, exploring its beauty in different forms. Emily’s floral style is whimsical, textural, and femme. She celebrates the timelessness of a reflexed rose on the daily and cherishes our local growing season.

    When she’s not in the shop or working on Exfolia events, Emily is a pastry chef specializing in custom confectionary fantasies turned realities. She is a passionate advocate for sustainability and focuses heavily on local seasonal produce, botanical flavors, and plant-based desserts.

    FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR

    Cassandra is the driving force behind the floral designs, merchandising and media at Exfolia. She’s in the shop, on-site installing your wedding and curating all of the best incense and self care goods for the shop! Her floral style can be described as a playful dichotomy of soft and hard. She likes to incorporate contrasting elements like delicate flowers or gentle tones with structural components or unconventional materials to create dynamic compositions that are visually intriguing and tell a story.

    Cassandra loves carpentry projects, thrifting, tending to her garden and outdoor adventures of land and sea especially with her pup Vinnie.

  • Dixon Kurz

    FLORAL ARTIST

    they/them

    Dixon is a floral artist with an eye for whimsy, opulence, and subtlety. They started in a grocery store floral department in 2013 and slowly built a practice of unexpected pairings and a love of the flowers that can be found blooming in gardens and briar patches across the south and midwest.

    When not slinging flowers at an Exfolia shop holiday or wedding, Dixon is a mental health professional. They value the process of helping someone take a feeling and turn it into a physical object to share with another. A gift of flowers is a poignant way to say "though it is fleeting and temporary, how wonderful it is that we exist at the same time together".

Our network includes international brands like Christian Louboutin and Diplomatico Rum,

local Chicago establishments such as Lula and Sugar Moon Bakery.

We work with institutions including Garfield Park Conservatory and Impact Culinary,

and partner with independent businesses and collectives including Txa Txa Club, Pink Salt and Laila Textiles among many others.

Exfolia Botanical offers floral, WORKSHOPS, food & supplies and reallocates funds to mutual aid organizations when possible.

We ethically forage materials based on season and proudly source fine ingredients from our small cutting garden and local farmers. We use recycled paper boxes and bags, limit waste and reuse mechanics when possible.

VISIT US IN LOGAN SQUARE!

The floral studio and retail shop in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood has been open to the public since June 2021. We share a residential block with our lovely neighbors and a few charming independently-owned businesses. The shop features a gorgeous weekly selection of fresh and dried floral for custom arrangements or ‘by the stem’ purchases. You’ll also discover an inspired mix of independently-made home and body items and a unique array of houseplants and pottery.
